Smart Controller
for Iota DLS Battery Charger/Converters

The IQ4 is designed for use with the DLS series converter/chargers. The IQ4 Controller allows the DLS charger to operate as an automatic 3-stage "smart charger". This gives the customer the benefit of Bulk, Absorption, and Float stage charging, increasing the charging capacity of the DLS charger and decreasing charge times and insuring proper and safe battery charging. In addition, The IQ4 insures proper battery charging while minimizing over-charging. This "smarter" technology monitors the battery at all times. If the DLS voltage remains in the long term float stage more than 7 days, the IQ4 will automatically deliver an equalization charge for a predetermined time, then automatically return to the normal float stage.

Bulk Charge
The batteries are charged from the full rated output of the DLS charger. During this stage, the batteries are recharged quickly to reduce charge times.

Absorption Charge
The batteries are then held in the absorption stage for a controlled period, insuring a full and complete charge. During this stage, the battery cells are equalized to 14.2vdc for increased capacity.

Float Charge
During the float stage, the DLS charge voltage is reduced to 13.6vdc. This minimizes gassing, while maintaining a full charge. If the battery voltage drops below 12.6vdc, the IQ4 will restart at the bulk charge stage and repeat this cycle.

Weekly Equalization
If the batteries have not received a "smart charge" during a 7 day period, the IQ4 will switch the DLS charger into a pre-programmed, equalization stage to top off the batteries. This ensures full batteries all of the time without over-charging!

DLS Parallel Operation
DLS converters can be connected in parallel at the dc output to increase the capacity. However, when used for battery charging both DLS units must have IQ-4 smart controllers. And both DLS units must be powered up from the ac source at the same exact time. This ensures that both DLS units will switch between charger stages at the same time in sync. If this is not done then the two DLS unit dc output Voltages may be different and try to fight each other. More than two DLS units can be
paralleled as long as these same instructions are followed.

Wiring Connections

In July 2002 Iota starting producing converter/chargers with a phone type jack for the IQ-4 instead of the screw terminals.  The IQ-4 has a matching plug that fits this jack.

This new IQ-4 will  NOT work with old DLS convertors that have screw terminals.

IF YOU HAVE AN OLD STYLE DLS CONVERTER WITH SCREW TERMINALS AND NEED AN IQ CONTROLLER CONTACT THE IOTA FACTORY TECH SUPPORT AT 800-866-4682.  THEY MAY STILL HAVE A LIMITED QUANTITY OF THE OLD STYLE UNITS AVAILABLE.
