Tower Details

This page shows the installation of a Southwest Windpower H80 Wind Turbine on a 50 foot tower near Sedona, Arizona in April 2002.  This installation was performed in less than a day by the workshop participants.  Most had never installed a tower before.  The photos and descriptions here do not show all the details.  See the installation manual for complete details.

Instructions

Step A user-manual-thumbnail.gif (635 bytes) Read the Tower Kit Installation Manual completely.  Select site.  Purchase pipe, electrical cable/components, guy anchors and pull rope.   Obtain all necessary tools.
Step B see diagram in manual Layout tower base and guy anchors.  Watch out for tower and guy wire obstructions.  Best location is where side-base-side anchors are level.
Step C swwp-tow01.jpg (42490 bytes) Install guy anchors.  At this site there was solid rock about 12" below the surface so expansion bolts were used rather screw auger type anchors.
Step D  swwp-tow02.jpg (56735 bytes) swwp-tow03.jpg (56511 bytes) Lay out lengths of pipe in proper sequence.  Assemble and position base.  Pin the base into position to prevent sliding when raising tower.
Step E  swwp-tow04.jpg (71144 bytes) swwp-tow05.jpg (57379 bytes) Pull power cable through pipes.  Connect pipes together using couplers.  Mount gin pole and position lift vehicle.
Step F swwp-tow06.jpg (47638 bytes) Attach guy wires to anchors.  Leave sufficient slack.
Step G swwp-tow07.jpg (25405 bytes) swwp-tow08.jpg (22008 bytes) Attach rope from pull vehicle to gin pole.  Slowly raise tower while carefully monitoring tension in all guy wires.
Step H swwp-tow09.jpg (32393 bytes) Stop the raising when it is necessary to adjust guy wire lengths.   When tower is fully raised, make further guy wire adjustments to make tower stand straight and vertical.
Step I swwp-tow10.jpg (40882 bytes) swwp-tow11.jpg (55948 bytes) Lower tower.  Position top coupler.  Hold turbine at end of tower pipe and make solid electrical connections.  Slide turbine into coupler and mount securely.  (Note that this process is much easier with the new Up-Tower Junction box which is available as an optional accessory.)  Mount blades and tail.
Step J swwp-tow12.jpg (40123 bytes) swwp-tow13.jpg (32756 bytes) Carefully raise tower and make any fine adjustments to guy wires.   Remove and disconnect pull rope (and gin pole if desired).  Make final electrical tie-ins to system.
Step K swwp-tow14.jpg (30685 bytes) Admire a job well done.  Notice how inconspicuous this installation is!
