Universal Controller for
Automatic Transfer Switches
240 Vac 1 or 3 phase

An Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS) transfers critical electrical loads from the normal utility (grid) source to a standby generator backup source. When the grid is restored it automatically switches the load back. The controller is the "brains" that performs and the monitoring of the two sources, the starting and stopping of the standby generator and the transfer control.

The NATS22A is a multi-function programmable logic automatic transfer switch controller. It is suitable for single and 3 phase systems and includes all necessary monitoring and protections. It works with most transfer switches in existence, including the recently discontinued GE Zenith MX-60 controller. Unlike some other controllers, the NATS22A does not require 12 Vdc control power and therefore an extra wire pair from the engine starting battery is NOT required.

Now you do not have to replace a perfectly good transfer switch simply because the original manufacturer will no longer sell a replacement for a non-working controller.


FEATURES


AS REPLACEMENT FOR GE ZENITH MX-60

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for the MX-50 or MX-60 controllers on an existing ZTX switch a summary of the installation steps would be as follows. Supplementary instructions are provided with order to aid in identifying the wires and making the changes. If the controller is ordered with installation kit the following items will normally be provided: control wire, butt splices, ties, fuses.

  1. mark the nine control wires at the harness interconnect plug at the existing MX controller board

  2. cut the plug off the harness

  3. trace two of those wires back to the position limit switches on the power contactor and disconnect them

  4. locate two specific Form-C coil clearing limit switches and verify their polarities

  5. reconnect the two wires from step 3 to these two limit switches

  6. select a location for the new controller (usually on front cover), make the cutout and mount the controller

  7. extend the length of the 8-conductor wire harness to the new controller using additional wire and butt splices

  8. terminate the wire harness at the controller and add the necessary wire jumpers

  9. connect the engine start wires

  10. make any programming changes and test the system

  11. mark the old MX touch-pad as non-functional or obscure it with a cover

 
AS REPLACEMENT FOR OTHER CONTROLLERS

When the NATS22A is used as a replacement for other types of controllers a control wiring diagram is needed for the switch. This can sometimes be found in the original manufacturer's instruction manual for the switch or it may be pasted inside the cover. If it is not available then it will have to be created by manually tracing the wiring. The number and operating Voltage of the coils or solenoids must also be known. With this information in-hand it is usually possible incorporate the NATS22A into the switch.
