Hydroelectric Turbine Generator
low head
non-adjustable permanent magnet alternator
with Turgo or Pelton wheel & up to 4 nozzles
12/24/48Vdc

This is HI-Power's latest and most efficient low-voltage brushless permanent magnet generator.  The LV400/800 complement the LV800/1500 for those low head sites.  This hydroelectric battery charger uses a Hartvigsen Turgo stainless steel 4" wheel and a special sealed permanent magnet alternator on an anodized square aluminum housing.   (Also available with Harris Pelton wheel by request.  But the Pelton is less efficient at higher flows.  Expect power output about 10% less with 3/8" and larger nozzles.)  Housing is 12" square and fits into a 10.25" square opening.  All hardware is stainless steel and the nozzles are brass.  This model is available with 1, 2, 3 or 4 nozzles installed at the factory.   Nozzle(s) can be up to 5/8 inch in diameter.  A 3/4" NPT male brass tube connection sticks through the housing for installer provided penstock and valve connections.  Installer must provide at least three feet of 1-1/2" flexible hose for each nozzle.  The rectifier is mounted and water cooled.  Includes induction dc ammeter with instructions is provided to assist with connections.

These units come standard with a permanent magnet brushless alternator with no adjustability.  This permanent magnet (P.M.) alternator is more efficient than the Motorcraft alternator, produces less heat, and therefore lasts longer.  Unit can be ordered for common 12Vdc, 24Vdc and 48Vdc systems.  An MPPT charge controller such as the Outback Power MX-60 can be used to step down the 48Vdc to charge a 12-24Vdc battery bank.

The alternating current from the alternator goes through the water-cooled rectifier to produce the DC output.  The unit comes complete with an induction ammeter. We recommend fusing the wire near the batteries.

Factory warranty on the unit for 2 years.

The alternator has two sealed 6203 bearings that should be changed every 4 - 10 years, depending on use and rpm.  These are standard bearing from most auto parts stores for around $15 each.  Replacement requires a 3-prong puller.  The turbine can also be sent back to the manufacturer for bearing replacement at a very nominal cost.

Maximum achievable power output is approximately 400 or 800 wattsMade in USA

Please tell us your head, flow, pipe size and length, and battery voltage when ordering using the drop-down menus below.

DC cable length and voltage drop must be evaluated carefully when laying out system.  Click here for our simple voltage drop calculator.  If the turbine will be located far from the battery bank, voltage drop and wire cost can be reduced by using the 48Vdc unit.
